Blog Assignment #EC: Marriage Experts

I've decided to interview my parents, who have been married together for 25 years. Our conversation about this topic was fast, but I understood everything they were telling me.

The challenges my parents had are:

1. When they lost their family members ( their fathers and mothers ). This was resolved by providing patience, understanding, and allowing each other to work together or individually with this situation.

2. I think the most challenging challenge for both my parents is raising their children
( my sister and I ) while having busy work schedules. They managed to resolve this by having one parent working around the other, allowing at least one parent to be with either my sister or me each day. But, we both enjoy having the house to ourselves when both our parents have to work on the same day.

The only new challenge my parents are trying to struggle with is impending retirement for one of them, especially for my dad, so that I can go exploring the whole world with him.

I asked my parents on how to make things work when it comes to marriage, and the advice they gave me for a successful healthy marriage is to have commitment, patience, and forgiveness between you and your loved one. Another advice my mother gave me was:
"Don't get married until both people are willing to work together at their marriage."

Now that I know all I need for marriage, I hope to have a good and memorable marriage as my parents, and my grandparents, did before me.

Blog Assignment #8: Final Blog Post

This is my final blog,  reflecting on my experience on using blogger to complete my homework assignments in Health 100.

I was completely lost at first, and I am still a little confused, on how it works while using Blogger. But it does help to accomplish reviewing and replying to other student's blogs easily without doing so in person.

Based on what I have learned so far while using Blogger, I don't plan to continue using it unless one of my other classes here at palomar will use this social website.

See you guys!

Blog Assignment #7: Herbals, Botanicals, and Supps

The Devil's Claw

1. Devil’s Claw: A traditional South African Root used for gastrointestinal disorders, which has become popular in Western Europe as an herbal replacement for Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory medications (NSAIDs). Although it is often used as an appetite stimulant or liver tonic, no studies have been evaluated in terms of safety during pregnancy, lactation, and childhood.

2. In Humans, Cases and randomized controlled trials report that Devil’s claw effectively
reduces joint pain and low back pain, as well as antidiabetic, appetite stimulant, liver and gall bladder tonic, and vulnerary; dosages in these studies ranged from 410 mg TID to 3 grams TID. One case series of adults suffering from gastrointestinal disorders reported that drinking Devil’s claw tea daily improved diarrhea, constipation, and flatulence.

3. Side effects are rarely reported. They include early morning headache, tinnitus, anorexia and
gastrointestinal upset. Devil’s claw has a very bitter taste and appears to be inactivated by
gastric acid, suggesting that enteric coated tablets or capsules would be the preferred route
of administration.

After finding all the following items from each fast food restaurant, I found it really surprising to find how much fat, salt, and calories there are in each food item. What also got my attention was how most people choose the least healthiest foods because of how they sound and look healthy when they actually aren’t.

Blog Assignment #5: Stress Reduction

The Stress Reduction I usually do is listening to music. I spend most of my time listening to Hawaiian music. It helps me keep my mind off other things that would stress me out. I choose music that is calm, relaxing, and slow, and sometimes, I would sing along to help me more to forget what else goes on around me. After I finish listening, I feel more relaxed and more in control of what I do, even after a nasty argument with anyone. I do feel that this helps a lot with my stress; I would do it every time if I feel I need to either relax or get away from all the stresses in life.

Blog Assignment #4: Love Language

                                  <3

I took the Love Language Quiz, which was easy to navigate through once I found the website.
The quiz consisted of 30 statements that others might do or say to show love to you. It will single out your primary love language, what it means, and how you can use it to connect with those closest to you and effectively enhance the relationships in your life. All you have to do is pick one item in each pair that you like better. It only takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete the profile. The highest score indicates your primary love language. The lower scores indicate those languages you seldom use to communicate love and which probably don’t affect you very much on an emotional level.

My scores were:
5
Words of Affirmation
5
Quality Time
3
Receiving Gifts
7
Acts of Service
10
Physical Touch

The quiz singled out my primary love language as Physical Touch.
A person whose primary language is Physical Touch is, not surprisingly, very touchy. Hugs, pats on the back, and thoughtful touches on the arm—they can all be ways to show excitement, concern, care, and love. Physical presence and accessibility are crucial, while neglect or abuse can be unforgivable and destructive.
After reading about this, I wasn't surprised to learn that my love language is Physical Touch because physical expressions show me more of how people care for me than expressions with words. However, I was surprised to learn that my lowest love language score was Receiving Gifts because I REALLY do like getting presents.

I found this activity fun and insightful; I would recommend this to anyone who wants to enhance their relationships with or get closer to people in their lives.

Blog Assignment #3: Kids Off Drugs

Blog Assignment #3: Kids Off Drugs

When I have kids, I will want to prevent them from using drugs.

People take drugs because they want to change something about their lives. The reasons people give for taking drugs are to fit in, to escape or relax, relieve bordom, want to seem grown up, or rebel or experiment.

What can you say to kids that they haven't already heard a thousand times?

How can you reach them with a message stronger than peer pressure?

I believe education plays a vital role in preventing drug abuse and it is the most effective weapon in the war on drugs. The best thing to do is to arm young people with the truth about drugs by providing tools that hold their attention, debunking common myths and empowering them to resist peer pressure to use drugs. To do this, you need to deliver a drug prevention message directly to young people in their own language.

I will discuss and address any reasons my kids might have for taking drugs as well as showing them  the documentary my parents showed me. The Truth About Drugs documentary, found at http://www.drugfreeworld.org/#/documentaries/truth-about-drugs-documentary-intro, is a no-holds-barred educational film narrated by those who survived the hell of addiction. It includes the most commonly abused drugs, including marijuana, alcohol, Ecstasy, cocaine, crack cocaine, crystal meth, inhalants, heroin, LSD, painkillers, Ritalin and prescription drug abuse, as well as their street names and short and long-term effects. The videos hit home with impact and are captivating. When you've got kids interested, real learning is going to follow and then you've got a real chance in saving them from the dangers of drugs.

Blog assignment #2: Food Inc.

Food Inc. Movie Review:

After watching the movie, there were many things that I would agree and disagree with.
I agree that the farmers and industries work business together in order to make money, but I also disagree because of HOW they do their business and of where our food for hamburgers and other meals comes from. It shocked me when they revieled the ugly truth about our food coming from farm animals and how they are treated and slaughtered. What shocked me even more is that most industries say continuing to slaughter the animals and shipping them is how they make their money, not caring about the wellness of the public, even if they get sick from the food.

The impact which this movie has left me with is leaving me to wonder: Is there another way for people to eat in any way and the industries to continue working WITHOUT mistreatment of the farm animals? It will make me feel more depressed for the animals if they are still being killed in that way for food products.

I would recommend this movie to anybody who still wants to eat meat because it makes you think about how animals should be used as food.
